When a disaster occurs, often the community's water supply is immediately put out of commission. Pipes are often broken and water polluted, which prevents the distribution of clean water. Inadequate access to potable water leads to widespread acute and chronic illness and is a major cause of death in many countries. Aquabox supplies a sturdy plastic box which will hold 75 litres of water. They are shipped containing water purification kits, survival gear and a minimum of one plastic bucket. One regular Aquabox will purify 1200 litres of polluted water, making it safe to drink. That is enough to allow a family of four to drink ten cups per day each for four months. The Rotary Club of Stratford Ontario is responsible for the preparation, storage and shipping of all boxes. Aquabox has supplied boxes to Peru, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Cuba and now, Haiti. Two weeks after Haiti's Earthquake, Aquabox had sent enough supplies to provide 360,000 litres of pure drinking water and they are planning to continue sending additional Aquaboxes there as long as the need exists.
